Alcatraz is a former prison, which was used as a federal prison from 1934 to 1963 a total of 29 years. It is located 1.5 miles (2.4 km) offshore from San Francisco in the center of San Francisco Bay in California. It has been open to the public since 1972 and has become a very famous historic and tourist place. The National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, now maintains the abandoned prison. Originally it was just another state institution Alcatraz, but the prison began to fame after the start of the notorious criminals such as housing George Machine Gun Kelly, Robert Franklin Stroud, Alvin Karpis, Henry Young and Al Capone to win. It is often referred to as "The Rock", as it has the reputation that no prisoners had ever successfully escaped from here. Alcatraz Island has appeared many times in popular culture, most notably in the movie "The Rock" starring Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage.
