Burg Hohenwerfen
Erlebnisburg or as it is also known, Hohenwerfen is an amazing castle in Austria, which has fully deserved the name. In literal translation Erlebnisburg means 'Castle of Experience'. Erlebnisburg is located about 40 km in the south of the Austrian city of Salzburg. It stands at one of two majestic mountains of Berchtesgaden and Tennengebirgs, which are part of the Alps. The Castle itself was built on a 155 meter cliff that rises above the valley Salzach. The Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg had ordered for the fortress. In the centuries that followed the construction, Hohenwerfen functioned as a strategic point, residence and hunting lodge for a number of Prince Archbishops who were the rulers of Salzburg. In the 12 t h century, the castle was refurbished, and was expanded. It was expanded again in the 16 t h century, although to a small extent. This was during the Peasants War, when peasants such as miners and farmers from the South of Salzburg revolted, and started looting and killing here and there, till at last coming to the town. Burg Hohenwerfen of today is a renowned tourist attraction. The castle has been kept in a decent state of preservation, and there are guided tours on offer for tourists. The weapon collection housed in the fortress is a notable sight. The fortress is an affiliated castle to the fortress Hohensalzburg and also goes back to the 11th century.
