Harsil is a small budding town located at a distance of 73km from Uttarkashi and 25 km on the way to Gangotri. The Bhagirathi valley is most enchanting and preserves many colourful spots in its lap. Situated amidst the incredible beauty of mountain peaks, 5000 mts. high is the quiet town of Harsil. It is situated in a valley on the bank of river Bhagirathi, at the confluence of the Jalandhari Gadh and the Bhagirathi, nestled in the shadow of the huge mountain that lies at the head of the Baspa Valley (Himachal Pradesh). Harsil is connected to the Baspa valley by several passes such as the Lamkhaga Pass. Apart from Matri and Kailash mountains, on the right side there is the Shrikanth peak behind which lies Kedarnath and in the rear there is Banderpunch. The entire Bhagirathi Valley is amazingly green and at Harsil, the river suddenly opens out into a wide picture-perfect valley, cutting a broad path with white sandy beaches on both sides, surrounded by apple orchards, pine forests and beautiful snow-capped mountains.
