IIT Madras campus is blessed with a large number of beautiful and exquisite wild trees which are native to the dry, evergreen forest type that exist here. There are quite a number of exotic species of trees that are introduced for horticultural purpose over a period of time. IIT Madras campus is spread over 250 hectares of lush green forest with a variety of plants/trees and animals. It was once the extension of the Guindy National Park. There are crocodiles in the lake, elephants and deer on the campus that are regularly sighted. Another beautiful aspect of the campus is the large number of banyan trees with their prop roots hanging to the ground and giving a wooded atmosphere to the campus. Especially of note is the ancient banyan tree which is prominent in the campus.
