Kagbeni (2810 m) is a small village of Mustang District in Nepal. It is a Tibetan-influenced settelment located in the valley of the Kali Gandaki River. The river is older than the Himalayas and is one of the major rivers of Nepal. This river is one of three which cross the Himalayas. The Kali Gandaki was one of the major trading routes between Tibet and India. Kagbeni means literally the "bolt at the two rivers” and this village formerly controlled the trade. One can see this as a fortified village, as all the houses are built in a common rectangle which a common outer wall and just three little entrance doors. The former fortress is nowadays in ruins. Kagbeni village is famous as a religious and tourist destination. The population of Kagbeni village is very less perhaps less than a 1000. Most of the people of the Kagbeni belong to Buddhism. Above the village on the other side of the Kali Gandaki is a cliff in which it is just possible to see the entrances to numerous, mysterious Himalayan caves of which there are many in this region. Kagbeni is surrounded by deserted hill-like moonland and further reaches into the Upper Mustang region of the Annapurna Himalayas. Daily life seems to be a part of the silence and space which surrounds this village.
