Moghul Masjid Iranian Mosque was constructed just over a century ago, by an Iranian trader, Mohomed Hussain Shirazi, the man who along with his Lucknow wife gave the Mumbaikar Shias a place that is a spiritual oasis. It is a Iranian Mosque no doubt, made for the Iranian migrants, bakery owners , restaurateurs , a place in the hustle bustle of a street life almost touching Bhendi Bazar on one end. The exterior was clad with Mosaic tiles brought from Iran with inlays of the Surahs (verses) from the Divine Quran. Also imported from Iran were the three tier crystal chandelier and the Persian carpets for the flooring. the external facade of the mosaic/main door was clad with blue mosaic tiles from Iran featuring an art form widely practiced in Iran. The inner walls are clad with a combination of Onyx and granite with inlay of several Surahs from the Divine Quran. Center point of Ishna Ashari Shia Muslims in Mumbai. During the ten days of Moharram when Shias mourn the sacrifice of Hussain (A.S.) this place attracts huge crowds. It also holds the distinction of a single person Moulana Mirza Mohammed Athar addressing the sermons for ten days of Moharram for the last 52 years (i.e. in 2011), probably a world record.
