At the entrance foyer in the open courtyard of The Palace of the Lost City, is a bronze, life sized statue of Shawu the elephant. Shawu is one of the magnificent 7 elephants of South Africa Kruger National Park. Shawu had the longest tusks of the 7 elephants and the longest recorded in all of southern Africa. All 7 elephants had exceptionally huge tusks, weighing in excess of 100 pounds each. As each of these elephants died, their skulls and tusks were kept in the Elephant Museum in Letaba, Kruger National Park. Shawu died in 1982 of an infection caused by old bullet wounds committed by illegal elephant poachers.
