Stanley Park is a large public park of approximately 1,000 acres which borders the west end of the Vancouver downtown area. The park forms a peninsula which juts out into English Bay and the Burrard Inlet, it was open in 1887. The most democratic running and walking area is on the seawall which runs around the outside edge of the park. This is an incredibly scenic route which makes walking or running wonderfully enjoyable. Stanley Park provides a great many things to discover on 1,000 acres (that’s roughly 4 square kilometres)! One of its biggest attractions visited by thousands of tourists every year are the totem poles at Brockton Point. Starting from the western side of the park and travelling clockwise you ar treated to views of English Bay and Burrard Inlet and the western part of Vancouver, all the way out to the University of British Columbia. At the northerly end of the park you will pass underneath the Lions Gate Bridge. As you continue around the park come across the 9 O’clock Gun from where you get a spectacular view of downtown Vancouver. HMCS Discovery is an onshore Canadian naval reserve division which trained and recruited sailors during World War II. After HMCS Discovery the body of water you see is called Coal Harbour. There is a lovely marina, and a large old building which dates to 1911. This is the club house for the Vancouver Rowing Club, the city’s oldest gymnastic club. From the club house there is a path which leads under the main road to Lost Lagoon. There is a good running path around Lost laguna or you can cross over a narrow part of the park to the area near where you started. In all the route around the park is approximately 6 miles or nearly 10km.
