Venice Canals
The Venetian canals and their gondolas provide one of the world's most romantic experiences. The 150 canals of Venice are its streets - roads for land passenger vehicles are nonexistent. Although Venetians once used gondolas extensively, they now leave this man-powered vessel for the tourists. The gondola is the romantic icon of Venice. Grand Canal (Canale Grande) is the main artery in Venice. Grand Canal is nearly 4 km long and varies in width. A ride along the Grand Canal is a must on a trip to Venice and an opportunity to discover all the Palazzi and Churches lining the Canal. 3 bridges span the Grand Canal – the Accademia, the Rialto and the Scalzi. Some of the most remarkable buildings along the Grand Canal are: Santa Maria della Salute, Ca’ d’Oro, Accademia, Ca' Rezzonico, Palazzo Belloni Battagia, Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo, Ca’ Pesaro (houses a Gallery of Modern Art), Palazzo Sagredo, Palazzo Bembo, Palazzo Manin-Dolfin (1538), Ca’ Foscari (1437), Palazzo Garzoni, Palazzo Barbarigo, Palazzo Dario (1487), Palazzo Venier dei Leoni which houses the Peggy Guggenheim modern art collection.
