The courtesan Nargis (Meena Kumari) is rejected by the family of her husband Shahabuddin (Ashok Kumar). She dies in a graveyard, giving birth to a daughter Sahibjaan who also grows up to be a courtesan (Meena Kumari). Sahibjaan falls in love with a mysterious, noble stranger who turns out to be her father's nephew, Salim (Raaj Kumar). Can a courtesan really escape her dishonourable life and settle into marital bliss?

The song "Mausam hai Aashiqana" starts with Sahibjaan singing in Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary and ends with her walking slowly on the Balmuri Falls.
Salim brings Sahibjaan to this Dargah since he wants to marry her. However, in a rush of guilt, she runs away from there because she believes that Salim deserves someone better.
It is in this scene that Salim proposes marriage to Sahibjaan for which she initially agrees.
