Synopsis

A small boy Sakthivelu Nayakar (Kamal Haasan) from Tamilnadu sees his father, killed in cold blood by a policeman. He kills the policeman and runs away to Bombay. He is rescued by a kind-hearted Muslim fisherman who takes him into his home in the sprawling suburban slums of Dharavi. The film traces his ascent as the mafia don and the godfather of the Dharavi people. He marries a prostitute and has two children, their lives and the final assasination of Velu Nayakar forms the storyline in this movie.

It is based on the life of a real-life Bombay underworld don - Varada or Varadarajan Mudaliar, and sympathetically depicts the struggle of South Indians living in Bombay. Nayagan has been called "The Godfather" of Tamil cinema. In 2005, Time Magazine included Nayagan in its "All-Time 100 Best Films" list.
