Not only does one have the opportunity to see great live music any night of the week in one of Melbourne’s many venues, the city centre is home to an extraordinary range of buskers, playing all sorts of music on the street. Melbourne understands the importance of busking. It provides atmosphere and entertainment for the streets of Melbourne. There are permits in 4 categories that street artists have to acquire in order to be a registered busker. Street fame in Melbourne demands two rather rare qualities: weather-resistance and talent. Best Busker awards are also organised. Most buskers have their regular spots like outside the Victoria Market or at Bourke Street Mall. Bonjah are the princes of the sidewalk. A five piece band, they’ve been playing outside the GPO for a couple of years.
