Pahalgam was once a humble shepherd’s village (its name literally means "Shepherd's Village"). About 95 km from Srinagar, Pahalgam is today the most popular hill resort in the Kashmir valley. It is Kashmir's premier resort, cool even during the heights of summer. Pahalgam has a 9-hole golf course at 2400m above sea level. The Lidder River has excellent fishing boats for brown trout. The Valley is surrounded by snow-covered mountains peaks, dense pine and deodar forests with River Sheshnaag originating from Sheshnaag Lake ( Holy Amarnath cave area ) flowing majestically through it. The Sheshnaag River moves to join River Lidder just 7 kms below At Pahalgham.
