Wenlock Downs, a vast expanse of grassy meadow on way to Pykara Dam from Ooty, is a favorite picnic location and is very popular with the movie makers of this country. It has grassy meadows, quaint lakes and a pristine atmosphere. The journey from Ooty to Wenlock Downs takes one to the most serene excursions from Ooty. The downs spread majestically across 20,000 acres or 80 kms of rolling lands that seems to be stretching endlessly. The far reaching downs are dotted with lines of high rising eucalyptus that add more green to the lush green land. This sweeping grassland of Wenlock Downs was once the renowned scene of the Udhagamandalam Hunt. At present the Wenlock Downs is home to the Gymkhana Club, and also the Government Sheep Farm. Sheep rearing and sheep breeding is extensively done amidst the beautiful locale. The sprawling acres also captivate the fancy of golf lovers from far and wide to the Ooty Gymkhana Golf Club. Ooty to Wenlock Downs is basically a breathtaking drive of just 8 kms. Buses and hired cars are easily available in this route. The Wenlock Downs are perfect for walking and hiking amidst this elegant landscape. This is popularly known as 9th and 6th mile as they are situated exactly at the 9th and 6th mile from Ooty.
